American Camino pg 102-107 (Spencer Mottley)
In this section of the book American Camino, Dr Ridick begins by explaining to the reader
the differing enviroments between the southeren half and the northeren half of the appalachian trail and
the differing feeling felt by those who have hiked the appalachian trail and trails in the westeren portion of
the U.S. . He then goes on to explain why many pepole who hike the applican trail find it boring to hike
alone, this is because of the thick tree cover that surrounds most of the trail and blocks out alot of the
panoramic views that many pepole find so pretty. Dr Ridick suggest that to gain full aprecation for the
appalachian trail one must enter into a relationship with his or her surroundings. Where consutuants such
as trees are not seen as it's but are seen as indiviuals that are each unique and special in their own right,
even if they don't particuarly standout to the naked eye. If a hiker choses to see their surroundings as
unique as opossed to mundane he or she will start to notice and engage the non obvouis varation around
them like different species of trees, different geogoical features and even different pepole, the latter who at
first may just seem like every other hiker but apon conversation, it becomes evident that they to are each
unique in there own ways and have their own stories. After reading this article I was left with a question,
how should the reader apply Dr Ridick's suggestion to their everyday life, off trail? My answer to this
question would be to wake up in the morning seeing every new day as unique, different and full of
potential and not like every other day. The same could be said for interactions at work or school, see your
fellow classmates, or coworkers as indivuals that have their own unique personalities, backgrounds and
stories as aposed to just veiwing them as kind of "background characters" that just exist. If more pepole
followed Dr Ridick's suggestion and made the most of their surrondings and situations it would make life
more interesting and less dreadful.
