I remember when I was a kid living in New Jersey just about an hour away from New York City. Some of my best memories from that time come from the trips my family and I took to the Bronx Zoo. My grandpa lived in New Jersey then too so we would meet there all the time. We would plan whole days around going there waking up early packing what we needed and getting excited about which animals we wanted to see first. Every time we pulled up to the entrance I felt a excitement every time.
The Bronx Zoo wasn’t just a place to see animals it was where my dreams started to grow. I remember watching the zookeepers feed the animals clean the habitats and talk to visitors about conservation. I thought that was the coolest job anyone could have.
My grandpa always encouraged my curiosity. He would point out facts on the little signs next to each habitat ask me questions about what I liked and asked me facts about the animals that he didn't know. I didn’t want to leave the zoo I loved every part of it, and it made it even better because my grandpa was there. Looking back now I can see how much those visits shaped who I am. It was the beginning of the path I want to follow in life caring for animals and helping people understand why they matter.
