Burial Pods and the Environment- Emma Schlosser
Burial pods have been becoming more popular in conversations in the recent years. The concept consists of planting cremated ashes of a loved one in a pH balancing, compostable urn, mixed with tree seeds. The idea is that it would leave a lasting impact on the environment with the growth of a new tree paired with the ashes, to create a kind of alternative life for someone who has passed away. Those are some of the common pros of this kind of burial. Some cons include the high pH content of a human's ashes, being harmful to the surrounding plant life. This is something that is somewhat mitigated by the use of the pH balancing urn. Along with this, the cremated remains create a lasting carbon footprint, as cremation in general is harmful to the atmosphere. Often talked about are the whole body pods, with human remains buried as is, paired with nutrients and seeds. This is not yet available anywhere and is "still being worked out."
The concepts are interesting and curious to begin with, but I wonder what exactly are the ramifications of this practice?
