Film Production and Pollution- Emma Schlosser

There are so many action movies out there with scenes of things blowing up, major environmental disasters, and other things of that nature. I was wondering, aside from CGI, how are these things created and how much emissions do movie sets typically put out? After digging a little deeper, I found out that the average production of a movie (typically with a budget of $70 million) leaves behind a carbon footprint of 3,370 metric tons, the equivalent to powering  656 homes for a year (Hill, 2025). The aspects of production taking up that much emissions comes from air travel for everyone, particularly if the film needs to be recorded in multiple places. Food, powering trailers, and hauling all the camera and light equipment all take up energy and space, not to mention disrupt the natural ecosystem of a place. Some people are trying to come up with initiatives to make the film industry more green but they still have a long way to go.
