Interacting socially with plants around us - Evie Cantú

On the Monday before break we were talking about how we interact socially with tree’s and I found the conversation interesting because it shifted to how trees interact socially with each other. One of  my classmates mentioned mycorrhizal fungi connections and I do also believe that the trees are able to communicate with each other through that way. Around 80% of trees are able to host mycorrhizal fungi, combining the fungi underground coverage and the roots, a single tree can have a very large underground coverage- combined with other tree’s underground coverage, many different trees are interconnected in that way. Although tree’s communicating “socially” might be a bit different from how we interact with others, I feel like it would make sense that trees connected by these mycorrhizal networks would maybe share nutrients gathered by the fungi, which in a way would be them interacting with each other. A lot of people I think underestimate trees, as well as plants in general because they obviously can’t communicate with us directly, but plants still communicate with each other. I remember someone bringing up as well how plants that get sung to or talked to grow better, and I think that’s also a nice way that we not only interact with plants socially, but we also influence them as well.
