Keeping the balance between humans and nature (also continued) - Evie Cantú

Another movie that touches on the keeping the balance between nature and humans is probably in my favorite movie Ponyo. Ponyo is from the same movie studio as Princess Mononoke, it follows a little goldfish who falls in love with a boy- she turns out to be the daughter of the ocean goddess, and because she fell in love with this boy and also turned herself into a human she unintentionally threw the Earth out of balance.  The whole area ends up becoming flooded and the ocean returns to an ancient state as a result of the world being thrown out of balance. The movie ends with Ponyo having to make the choice of whether or not she wants to stay human or return to being a fish- and if she does turn human she has to give up her magic permanently. It’s similar to the little mermaid in a way, but it also incorporates how the humans have affected the ocean and the consequences, which the Disney movie does not I don’t think. But like in the beginning of the movie it shows the ocean littered with trash and that upsets Ponyo’s dad- a sorcerer, who is actively against humans. It doesn’t involve as much environmental aspects as Princess Mononoke, but it still involves a pretty good amount of it- it’s just not as obvious.
