Living like Water in Water-Emma Schlosser
Living like water in water is going through the motions where everything is consistent, and when the environment changes, the being itself remains so. The example that was used in class was the wasp who had an exact way of living. It would dig a hole, find a specific kind of worm, and bring the worm to the entrance. It would go into the hole and lay the egg and then bring the paralyzed worm down and get the egg inside the worm, so when born, the baby would have its first meal ready to go.
Scientists did an experiment where they would move the worm every time the wasp brought it to its dwelling, the wasp would go back out and find the worm, bringing it back to the hole, only to find the worm was moved again. This cycle repeated itself until the wasp died from exhaustion. The wasp lived like water in water, never straying from its instinctual habits, even up until death.
What separates us from this? Language is the crux of this for us, and logical reasoning, though I would argue the wasp has logic as well, never straying from its intended path, yet also never stopping. I am confused though, because don't all beings have their own kind of communication whether it's sounds, body language, or chemical output like flowers or trees? What separates us from living like water in water?
