Mother Earth vs. Mother Nature- Emma Schlosser

I had never heard the term Mother Earth before entering this class. It was interesting to hear something so similar, yet so different to Mother Nature. Mother Nature is the embodied idea of personifying the quirks and happenings of the environment, giving life to the constituents of a Place. Personally, the term to me is comforting, as mothers can be, yet it has a kind if edge to it. The same Mother Nature that lives in a quiet stream also lives in the havoc of an earthquake or tsunami, signifying what exactly? Her rage at humans? A natural consequence of the way things have to be?

When it comes to Mother Earth, it is more encompassing of the way things are, not to mention, going back into the roots of indigenous peoples all around the world. Mother Earth refers to the planet itself, as a living entity composed of aerobic and anerobic life. When it comes to conservation, we want to protect Mother Earth and all Her components, not just the trees or other plant life. I wonder about how Mother Earth is depicted across generations and in native spaces.

Mother Earth is a symbol rather than a sign. It allows us as humans to connect with it on a deeper level. It is a human construct we engage with symbolically. Mother Earth is universal, personal, and transcends cultures.
