Sustainable Environmental Living - Alese Cowardin

Learning about living with the environment from our guest speakers was quite riveting. It is amazing how they have created an entire micro-community of sorts, while also contributing to the natural environment around them. I do think it would be interesting to see how an idea such as this would transfer to communities in more urban settings. Due to the lack of space for an abundant environment, would an urban area be limited in the natural landscape they can have? Could they transform an apartment space into an environmental community the same way that they have Garden Atriums? If so, this would provide highly sustainable living moving forward in urban cities, even if the cost of development would make it no longer be affordable housing. Perhaps, then, it would be better to find a way of sustainable living in urban areas that is not quite as extreme in cost as Garden Atriums is but would still follow the general outline for the community. This could also benefit the relationships of people living in these urban centers, as they would share something with their neighbors and come to appreciate one another the same way that suburban neighborhoods do.
