Technological Advancements and the Withdraw from Nature (Koyaanisqatsi) - Alese Cowardin

The art film we watched in class dramatized the technological advancements of our society and how they have caused a imbalance in nature and our connection with nature. Our life is now in turmoil or out of balance. Our connection with nature is disintegrating and as we advance further we have entered into a state of life that class for another way of living. We have entered Koyaanisqatsi. I saw a similar image while in Prague over fall break, as I was there at the same time as the Signal Festival which uses light shows to show different parts of our development with nature. One show in particular used the Astronomical Clock Tower to highlight the destruction of our connection with nature and each other as technology has continued to develop. It was fittingly called OVERLORD and you could stand there in the square and watch as the lights overtook the beauty of the clock tower and created a scene of coding to highlight the idea that we ourselves have become slaves to the overlord that is technology. Koyaanisqatsi demonstrated this as well – as our society developed, our world became further out of balance, ending with the implication that our focus on technology and advancement might be our downfall.
