Water as a Human Right - Alese Cowardin

Watching the Water Wars in class was a particularly interesting experience, mainly because it highlighted how there still are a lot of people in communities all throughout the world that do not have easy access to this precious resource. As the majority of the world can agree on the fact that water is a basic human necessity and even a basic human right, communities still struggle to find a clean water source. The human rights aspect of this issue stands out to me specifically due to my work with the Reiff Center for Human Rights and Conflict Resolution. Most of the time our work is focussed on issues pertaining to government negligence or governmental actions towards a specific person that violates their rights under a specific treaty, but we often forget that there are environmental rights that are also violated and may have not been protected anyway. I am specifically reminded of a specific situation that occurred here in the United States, in which a community’s water supply was tainted with methane gas and would light on fire, highlighting that even in the United States water sources are not protected from industrial influence and we do not truly value water as a basic human right the way we say we do.
